Can Illegal Immigrants Legally Get Car Insurance?
There has been some contention in the media of late as to whether or not illegal immigrants can legally obtain car insurance. The answer is: yes, they can. Actually, a more accurate answer would be: “Why not?”
This is because there is no law stating that illegal immigrants cannot get auto insurance — and why should there be? The simple fact that you are reading this article proves that it is a legitimate concern and, when an accident happens, wouldn’t you rather the other driver be insured, regardless of his nation of origin and legitimacy of his citizenship?
Also, consider the situation from an insurance company’s point of view. Not only is there a market for increased insurance sales, but it also means less comprehensive claims due to uninsured motorists.
Illegal immigrants fall into a bit of a gray area in the insurance industry called “nonstandard drivers”. This group not only includes those who are not in the country legally, but also people with a large amount of tickets or accidents and legal people without licenses. It has only been recently that illegal immigrants were barred from obtaining drivers licenses. Some states still allow it. Illegal immigrants generally pay more for their insurance as, with most insurance companies, they automatically fall into the group of people that do not qualify as safe drivers, so insurance companies are able to make quite a bit of profit off of this small margin of people.
Illegal immigrants are willing to buy insurance because, in the case of a minor accident, they are able to avoid interaction with authorities by providing their insurance information to the other party in the wreck. Some people see this as a way of getting away with remaining in the country illegally, but the simple fact of the matter is that in a minor accident where the illegal immigrant had no insurance, it would have likely been a hit and run instead.
