Insure my rental car?
Do you need insurance when you rent a car? Probably not. The insurance on the car is usually offered in a little mumble from the rental agent. It is to their advantage that you check that little box. Do you want the coverage for just two bucks? No thanks. It’s likely you are already covered.
What to look into before renting.
Before travelling you should consult your own auto insurance agent. Often it will turn out that your insurance will cover you even in a rental just as if you were driving you own vehicle. This may be something that your policy doesn’t offer without asking. Ask. In the same area, in most policies you may select the option of “rental” for major engine or body repairs. It’s a little known aspect of just about every policy that your agent will not offer unless asked. It can save you many dollars over the life of a policy on any given vehicle. You will probably be covered for these instances for about eight dollars a year.
Might I have other options?
Members of AAA are almost always covered for rental insurance. Call them first. They will not only cover you for a rental car, they will probably get you a better deal for the rental itself. Not AAA material? How about AARP? Again they offer member services that can exceed or match any deal from a travel agent. It is only a couple of bucks, but keep it in your own pocket.
Also ask the rental agent about procedures in the event of a break down. It might be actually possible to just walk away and ask for another car! What are the company’s guarantees? Again, your own AAA policy might be a better way to go. Remember these issues not only on a personal or business trip, but in the event you rent a haul-it-yourself truck as often happens when moving children to college. Rentals can happen at anytime or for any event in your life.
