What are the Penalties for Having No Auto Insurance?
Driving without car insurance carries penalties ranging from fines to jail time. The severity of any penalty issued can depend on the number of infractions or the added charges from any additional laws broken or accidents incurred while uninsured. In this age of affordable car insurance, magistrates and judges in most jurisdictions are cracking down on uninsured drivers. Beyond the immediate penalties of driving without insurance that will almost inevitably lead to impoundment of a vehicle, damages are left that remain for extended periods of time.
Financial Implications
Though the most common reason drivers continue to operate vehicels without insurance is attributed to the cost of coverage, driving without car insurance is much more damaging financially. Fines will be assessed to the driver of an uninsured vehicle at the moment a lack of insurance is verified by the court. Failure to pay the fines can result in additional charges and collections dependent upon the number of previous infractions. If a driver happens to get into an accident or commit other driving infractions while operating uninsured, they may face jail time and be required to carry a bond in addition to paying reinstatement fees. Fees to have a license reinstated can run into the thousands of dollars when added to the bond, court costs, and recovery of a vehicle from impound or private towing companies.
Collateral Penalties of Driving Without Car Insurance
Though an officer of the law will often drive an uninsured driver to their residdence with a ticket to return to court or give them the opportunity to call a licensed driver, more serious situations warrant booking at the police station. If any driver has committed the infraction of driving without insurance as a repeated behavior, they may be subject to license suspensions for extended periods of time. A license suspension assumes to the guilty party the additional costs of public transportation and fees to obtain work or school driving privileges.
