What to do if I Don’t Have Car Insurance?
There are laws that have to be followed by drivers on the road, some of the most important which revolve around car insurance and the importance of it. If you own a car you need to be covered by car insurance and if you are not, you could end up in serious trouble.
What it is
Car insurance is very similar to house insurance, life insurance, and other types of insurance. It is better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. If you are driving around without car insurance then you are breaking the law, and if you get caught, you will have to deal with the consequences. Car insurance protects against loss due to traffic accidents, theft and other damage, and in order to get car insurance, one needs to go through an appropriate company and purchase a car insurance policy.
Because there are hundreds of different car insurance companies to choose from, it is important to get quotes and compare between them, in order to get the best deal. To get a quote you will need to provide certain personal information, including your date of birth, address, driving history, and usually the make and model of car that you own as well.
If You Are Uninsured
Whether you have just not gotten around to getting car insurance, are being ignorant and have just decided you don’t need it, or maybe your policy has run out and you have yet to renew it, whatever the case may be, if you are driving without car insurance then you are breaking the law.
You may drive around and be lucky enough to not get caught, but if you were to get into an accident, you would really be in trouble. Typically car insurance would cover the damages if you got into an accident, and if you are uninsured, this means that there is no insurance policy to back you up and that all the damages you owe are going to be paid out of your own pocket. This is going to be really unfortunate if the cost of damages is high and especially if you are at fault for the accident and expected to cover not only the cost of damage to your own car, but the other driver’s as well.
On top of that, there are various penalties that you may be charged with if you are found without proper car insurance. Typically penalties for driving without insurance range between $100 and $500 but can be even higher than that. Each state has different requirements, but regardless of where you live, you are going to need to get car insurance. It is definitely not worth it to skip getting car insurance. Driving a car means that you need to take responsibility for yourself on the road, and more than anything this means that you need to have proper coverage at all times.
