What To Do If You Have A Very Bad Driving Record And Need Insurance?

If you have a bad driving record, be it a history of crashes or multiple dui’s, there are things you can do but it makes the job difficult. Most places will insure you even with a horrible record, but the catch is that you have to pay more than the average person. This can seriously harm your chances of obtaining affordable insurance and you really need to take a lot of time finding a place that will give you a reasonable rate. There are some additional things you can do to bring your costs down, but it will take a lot of effort to get the ball rolling with a bad driving record.

Driver Safety Classes

Taking a class on road safety (that you are not ordered by the court to complete) will impress insurers and allow their policies to lower your rate. How much this can lower your rate depends on how bad your bad driving record is, but will typically save you at least a couple hundred dollars a year. Taking several classes will increase your chances even further, but not all of these programs are free. Sometimes you may need to pay for a certain class, other times they may be free. Either way the more of these you have under your belt, the better your chances will be of getting a reasonable rate.

Get Insured On Someone Else’s Policy

This is another way that you can bring your insurance rates down. If you have an elderly person in the family with a good driving record, or anyone with a better driving record than you for that matter, this can lower your monthly payment. This is totally legal to do, and the amount of money you can save varies greatly with each company. If you know many people who may be willing to allow you on their policy, check with each of them to see which person’s insurance company will give you a lower rate.
